International Burger Day - 28 May
No matter where in the world you live, burgers are more than just food — they’re a way of life. There’s something universally comforting about them. Whether you’re grabbing one from a food truck on a busy street, making your own at a weekend braai, or indulging in a fast-food fix after a long day — burgers always hit the spot. They’ve become a staple in many diets around the world, and honestly, the more I think about it, the more I realize: I’ve yet to meet someone who doesn’t love a good burger.
And that alone is something worth celebrating.
Luckily, this week gives us the perfect excuse — May 28th is International Burger Day. It’s a day dedicated to honoring one of the most beloved comfort foods out there. As I walked through the center of The Hague yesterday, I noticed burger promotions everywhere.
But as exciting as those deals were, none of them quite hit the same as the one I remember most fondly — one you can’t find on any Dutch street corner.
Lately, I’ve been missing South Africa more than usual. And this week, it hit me harder. I found myself thinking about the simple pleasures we often took for granted — like the Wacky Wednesday deal at Steers.
With loadshedding disrupting our routines, it became a bit of a tradition: when the lights went out, we’d head to Steers for that unbeatable two-for-one burger special. It was convenient, affordable, and honestly, kind of iconic. Sometimes, it’s not the gourmet meals or elaborate recipes that leave the biggest impression.
So this week, as International Burger Day rolls around, I’ll be celebrating with a burger in hand — but my heart will be with that old familiar memories back home, the one with the glowing Steers sign and the smell of flame-grilled patties.
Weekly Menu - 26 May

Tuesday:
School Lunch: Mini Pizza's

Tips for this idea:
I have added a recipe for pumpkin soup. The recipe can be made exactly the same with the exception of swapping out the pumpkin for butternut. This can be a super quick meal if you already purchase the butternut precut.
Wednesday:
School Lunch: Croissants
Dinner: Burgers (It is International Burger Day after all)
Tips for this idea:
Whether you try your own make your own burger stand at home, or go out for a burger. This burger night can be a well deserved break for parents with happy kids.
Thursday:
School Lunch: English Muffins (Sweet or Savory)

Tips for this idea:
I will add a recipe for this meal later in the week, please look out for the recipe on Tuesday night.
Friday:
School Lunch: Hotdogs
Dinner: Family Pizza Night
Tips for this idea:
There is no need to make pizza from scratch - in all countries there is a relatively easy and economically friendly pizza base available for all. You can make the meal vegan, vegetarian or even a meat lovers if that is what you feel for.
Saturday:
Lunch: Ciabatta Sandwiches
Dinner: Loaded Fries
Tips for this idea:
Loaded fries can be made anyway you like, my favorite recipe is creating a creamy white sauce filled with grilled chicken fillets and some macon. Then topped with cheese. I have previously mentioned the tradtional Kapsalon which is fries topped with salad and cheese. This can be made in anyway you like. Find ways to get creative with it.
Sunday:
Lunch/Supper: Mediterranean Fish Bake
Tips for this idea:
Mediterranean Fish bakes are generally an easy meal to make. This is a fish dish, topped with olives, olive oil, fresh cherry tomato and red onions and then lightly baked until cooked. This can be served with pita bread, if you have it available or even rice.
