Learning New Things Everyday
Recently I celebrated a milestone birthday. I had many ideas growing up about what my life would and wouldn't be at this point. The biggest thing I thought is that at this point I would have it all figured out!
The joke is on me, each day I learn something new. The worst part is, I learn something new about things I thought I knew. This is how you know the aging process is moving swiftly.
To kickstart my week, I learned about a meal in Dutch called "Flammkuchen." Translated, this means Flame cake. I looked at this and thought it was pizza—turns out I would offend an entire culture with this statement.
Difference between Flame Cake and Pizza
Flame cake is a thinner layer of pizza (think thinner than thin base) - whereas pizza contains a nice dough that is also quite filling.
Pizza is traditionally made with a tomato base, while the flame cake is traditionally made with crème fraîche as the base.
Toppings are lighter on the flame cake where pizza can get crowded really quickly, a flame cake has very few toppings lightly sprinkled
Pizza layered with added extras and usually topped with cheese, this is not the case with the flame cake.
While it is still debated where this dish originated from whether it was Germany or France, it is a great alternative when incorporating few calories into your diet.
I hope you learnt something this week too.
Weekly Menu - 16 June
Monday
School Lunch: Mini Pizza
Dinner: Enchilada's
Tips for this idea:
Enchilada's can be made with any meat you like, whether it is mince, chicken or even mushrooms. It is wraps layered with a salsa sauce topped with cheese and your choice of meat and some black beans. Folded in a tray and then add some addition cheese. My kids personally are huge fans of this.
Tuesday:
School Lunch: Hot Dogs
Dinner: Steak Fried Rice
Tips for this idea:
Most days I really miss the Nandos spicey rice. I therefore love a zesty butter sauce to fry my rice in, if you not a huge fan of egg fried rice. This is also a nice meal for hot or cold weather.
Wednesday:
School Lunch: Croissants
Dinner: Chicken Tray Bake with Naan
Tips for this idea:
Wednesdays are the break day - therefore there is nothing better than adding chicken and roasted vegetables already cut up with a little bit of seasoning to the oven to make things easier for yourself.
Thursday:
School Lunch: Cheese Quesadillas
Dinner: Creamy Lemon Spaghetti
Tips for this idea:
Creamy lemon pasta is a new recipe , I found on my pintrest feed this week. While I love eating this when out it is not something I often make at home. This week I will try it! It does not contain much ingredients simply a full lemon, a cup of cream and some salt and pepper cooked in a pan and then add your cooked spaghetti.
Friday:
School Lunch: Nuggets
Dinner: Flammkuchen/Pizza
Tips for this idea:
If you are not up for trying something new, pizza night is generally a winner for a friday after a hectic week. Order in or pop some dough in the oven. Either way, it is great to give yourself some time off.
Saturday:
Lunch: Chicken Tacos
Dinner: Homemade Gatsby
Tips for this idea:
For those who are not familar - a Gatsby is a large South African bread roll filled with not so crispy fries and topped with every sauce and filling that your heart desires. Being so far from home this is such a great reminder of South Africa. It is fun to buy - but even better to make your own, you may be surprised about how much more you like it.
Sunday:
Lunch/Supper: Chicken Curry & Rice
Tips for this idea:
Lately, it has come to my attention that curry means different things to different people. For me curry is so spicey that I usually can't breathe, while for others its less hot but more filled with different flavors. No matter how you enjoy your curry a Sunday is usually a nice way to start the new week.
